Each STAR review examines four areas: domain depth (have you done this exact thing, not an adjacent version), expert operator track record (did you build it or advise it from a distance), coachability signals (how you've adapted when things went wrong), and founder fit (do you build trust fast enough to matter in a short engagement).
Reviewers include Forward Share Ventures' founding team and senior network members who've operated at the same level. Peer review matters here – expert operators know what to ask.
What the STAR designation means for you
STAR expert operators get matched to active founder demand, not placed in a directory and forgotten. The Forward Share Network runs a two-sided match: companies surface needs, we surface expert operators whose specific track record fits. You don't compete on rate; you compete on fit.
Participation takes three forms: advisory board seats (PABs), scoped consulting engagements, and angel coinvesting alongside the founders you advise. Most expert operators in the network work across all three – what founders sometimes call a Polyhat practice.
How the application works
The application takes about 20 minutes. You'll walk through three to four STAR situations from your career – each one specific enough that a founder in your domain would immediately recognize it as real. We'll follow up with a 30-minute conversation before making a decision.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Most decisions are returned within two weeks of the follow-up conversation.

What qualifications do you look for?
Domain depth and expert operator track record are the two non-negotiables. We're not filtering on pedigree – we're filtering on whether your STAR situations are specific enough to be useful to a founder facing the same problem. Senior title without expert operator accountability doesn't clear the bar.
Is there a cost to apply or participate?
No application fee. Participation in the network is free for expert operators. Compensation structures vary by engagement type – advisory board equity, consulting day rates, and coinvestment rights are set per engagement with the founder.
What if my background doesn't fit neatly into one function?
Most STAR expert operators span functions. The review evaluates your deepest domain first, then flags secondary areas. You'll be matched based on the specific situation a founder is navigating, not a job title. Polyhat experience is an asset, not a liability.
How long does the review process take?
Most applicants hear back within two weeks of the follow-up conversation. If the timeline shifts – usually due to volume – we'll let you know upfront. We don't leave applicants in the dark.
What's the risk if I apply and don't pass the review?
You're welcome to reapply after six months. The most common reason for not clearing is situations that are too high-level to be useful – if that's the feedback, it's specific and actionable. Nothing from the review affects your professional standing or is shared externally.
